Information Regarding SAFER Grants Now Available via IAFF Website

The Grants Administration Department is responsible for approximately 20 federal awards totaling more than $10.6 million in financial assistance for the IAFF. Additionally, the department provides direct assistance to affiliates in finding appropriate sources of funding, reviewing grant proposals and interpreting grantor policies, rules and restrictions.

FY 2015 Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) Grant Program

The Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) grant application period is expected to open the second week of November. The AFG grant program has helped fire fighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources. The IAFF has funding partnerships with a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), among others.

Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program
The importance of adequate fire department staffing has been well-documented by independent studies. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the consensus standards-making body of the fire service, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), have both promulgated standards for the minimum number of fire fighters needed to respond safely and effectively to emergencies. Far too few jurisdictions meet these minimum safe staffing levels, a problem which was made even more acute by the Great Recession. Assistance to Firefighters (AFG or FIRE Act) Grant Program
FIRE Act grants help fire departments purchase equipment and receive training that such departments could not otherwise afford. Equipment and training funded by the FIRE grant program help fire fighters do their jobs safely and effectively by improving the effectiveness of fire department operations and protecting the health and safety of local fire fighters. Learn more ...
