Rochester Fire Fighters’ Union President Ascends to Statewide Leadership
The New York State Professional Fire Fighters today announced that a 30-year veteran of the Rochester Fire Department has been appointed Secretary/Treasurer of the 18,000-member organization representing full-time members of municipal fire departments across the state.
The selection of Eddie Santiago follows the retirement of James McGowan which was announced last month. Under NYSPFFA constitution and bylaws, in the event of a vacancy, the executive board is empowered to fill the position to the conclusion of term on an interim basis.
At its biannual convention scheduled for June in Corning, delegates will consider candidates for a full, two-year term which begins on September 1, 2025.
Santiago has served as First District Vice President representing 28 IAFF unions in the eight-county Western New York Region since 2023; and President of IAFF Local 1071, representing nearly 500 Rochester City Fire Fighters since 2015.
Santiago’s appointment is the first time a member of the Rochester Fire Department has served in a statewide role with the NYSPFFA. The Secretary / Treasurer is the number two position in the NYSPFFA leadership.
“Eddie Santiago has been a leading voice for fire fighters and organized labor for nearly 20 years,” said NYSPFFA President, Sam Fresina. “He is known for his direct and thoughtful manner and is a trusted and responsible steward of the funds of public employees.”
“I am humbled by the support and confidence of the Executive Board and members all across the state,” said Santiago. “I am confident in my ability to serve the membership, protect their resources, and seek opportunities to enhance and strengthen communications and advocacy.”
In the role of secretary / treasurer, Santiago’s responsibilities include maintaining an accurate record of NYSPFFA membership and affiliates, the proceedings of its executive board and biannual convention; shall have charge of all funds of the NYSPFFA and shall make disbursements to cover all authorized business and organizational affairs.
