Chief Stefano Napolitano, the City of Batavia Fire Department and the International Association of Firefighters - Local 896 are proud to host “You as a Firefighter & Cancer” presented by Mahlon Irish Jr. (ret.) Lieutenant, City of Ithaca, NY.
Lt. Irish has over 40 years in the Fire Service. This includes 30+ years as a NYS Fire Instructor, serving the City of Ithaca for over 22 years as a firefighter and Lieutenant, and as past Chief and current member of the Homer Fire Department.
As a prostate cancer survivor since 2014 Lt. Irish works tirelessly to educate firefighters about the increased danger of cancer. The first part of the program talks about the contamination of our bodies from today’s fires and how it affects us. It discusses the stress our bodies endure in a fire and our increased ability to absorb carcinogens. Also addressed are some simple changes to our normal activities, new technologies and practices to decontaminate ourselves as well as how to avoid exposing our fellow firefighters and families to unintentional contamination.
