Legislative Update: Overview of “50-a Repeal” S.8496 (Bailey)/A.10611 Rules (O’Donnell)

Jun 10, 2020 | nyspffa_news

Brothers and Sisters,

Below is the new proposed 50a bill with a brief synopsis, which is likely to be signed by the Governor.   We have been opposed since the beginning of the legislative session and prior, to any changes to the protections afforded to us under the current 50a law.  Since recent developments in Minneapolis and other parts of the country, there was an unstoppable push for change since the end of last week.    Since then we have been working on preserving as much as we could, working with other Unions, legislative leaders, the governor’s office and with our Executive Board to name a few.

Attached is an overall synopsis of the bill.  We are working on a more concise document on how these changes will potentially affect us as firefighters.  This will be forwarded as soon as possible.

Today, the Executive board met with the State attorneys and the state lobbyists. Technical and application issues have already been identified and we will continue to assess the implications as we move forward and resolve any issues we can.

Any questions or input please share with your District VP, any other board member or myself.

Fraternally,

Samuel A. Fresina
