The following statement is attributable to Sam Fresina, President of the New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association
“At 10 a.m. this morning, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the long awaited decision on the Janus case. And, as we anticipated with the addition of Justice Neil Gorsuch, the court issued a 5-4 decision opening the door to free-riders to benefit at the expense of the union membership.
At 10:01 a.m. it was even stronger.
The women and men of the career fire service are committed to one another - when we report to the fire house for a shift, are dispatched to an emergency call, and when we collectively bargain for wages, benefits and the well-being of our 18,000 members and the families who rely on them.
Today and in the days ahead, we will be working with the International Association of Fire Fighters and New York legal teams to assess the decision in detail, and will be advising each of our 107 Local Affiliates regarding next steps.”
