Fire fighter cyclists pass through Albany on Chicago-to-Boston trek.

FFCyclistsChicago fire fighters passed through the Capital Region on Wednesday, June 4, on their way to Boston on bicycles – part of their effort to raise awareness and funds for two charities.

The Bike to Boston ride benefits the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation and Ignite the Spirit Fund, the latter of which benefits fire fighters in need.

The 41 & 9 Foundation was founded in the memory of Henry “Hank” Schuler of Chicago, who died Dec. 14, 2007, after a battle with a rare subtype of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He was 14. His father organized the ride – one of many events the foundation hosts each year.

Forty-one and nine were the numbers Hank wore playing football and baseball, respectively.

“We wish the fire fighters and their crew members the best of luck, and good health, as they cross into Massachusetts and make their way to Boston this weekend,” said Mike McManus, NYSPFFA president. “Our members are with them in spirit as they work to raise funds to cure ALL and provide assistance to Chicago firefighters and their families.”

Albany fire fighters and police officers escorted the 16 riders, including 12 fire fighters, who set out from Wrigley Field in Chicago on May 26, Memorial Day, and are scheduled to arrive at Boston’s Fenway Park late Friday. Their goal is to raise $100,000.
