The New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association hosted an open house and news conference to showcase its new office space on, Tuesday, May 13, at 174 Washington Ave. in Albany.
NYSPFFA, demonstrating its long-term commitment to Albany, purchased the building in late 2013, marking the first time in the union’s 75 year history it has owned, rather than rented, office space in in the capital city.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Albany County Executive Dan McCoy joined NYSPFFA President Mike McManus, NYSPFFA Executive Director Sam Fresina, fire fighters from across the state, local legislators and other invited guests at the ribbon cutting. It was followed by a tour of the four-story building and a reception.
“Our association has been proud to call Albany home for our entire existence,” McManus said. “We are very happy with our decision to re-invest in Albany, purchase and renovate our new home, and open our doors to friends, neighbors and colleagues.”
NYSPFFA represents 18,000 men and women working full-time as members of municipal fire departments across the state. NYSPFFA advocates on behalf of members who serve in 104 local unions, 41 counties and in the boroughs of New York City.
“I am grateful and encouraged that the fire fighters association chose to purchase and refurbish this property,” Sheehan said. “It is a positive step for downtown, as well as a strong statement that Albany is a desirable place to work, live and do business.”
McCoy echoed the mayor’s remarks.
“Fire fighters are vital to the safety communities, but they are also good neighbors” he said. “I congratulate them on their continued commitment to the county, city and neighborhood, and I thank them for their service, not just today, but every day.”
